Period poverty is the lack of access to sanitary products like pads and tampons, menstrual hygiene education, sanitation, like toilets, hand washing facilities, and, or, waste management.
Evidence based research from vulnerable middle class, the transitory poor and the chronic poor households in South Africa shows that many girls are not able to manage their menses/period and associated hygiene with ease or dignity.
In disadvantaged and rural communities there is usually not a spare “anything”, much less sanitary pads.
Let’s face it, no money means no access to feminine menstrual products. It’s that simple!
We would like to change this!
The reality is, menstruation is a major barrier to education for many of our girls
Can you imagine what your life would look like today if you missed 25% of your school career?
The inability to afford menstrual hygiene products for monthly menstrual cycle is called Period Poverty.
Consequently, girls miss a week of school every month resulting girls losing out on about 25% of school each year, I am sure you can agree, this is a massive set back in their education and puts girls at a clear disadvantage against their male counterparts.
Access to safe & dignified menstrual products is a fundamental need for girls & the right to manage menstruation without shame or stigma, is essential for anyone who menstruate.
